"Barbie Dreams" is a song by Nicki Minaj from her fourth studio album Queen. The song samples "Just Playing (Dreams)" by The Notorious B.I.G. just as her song "Dreams '07" from her first mixtape Playtime Is Over did. It was released as the fourth official single from the album following media hype, impacting Top 40 Rhythmic Radio on August 14, 2018. The song peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Background

During her Beats 1 Queen Radio show, Minaj talked about the song, stating it is not a diss track. In her own words —

"You guys know Barbie Dreams is not a diss right? It's just some funny shit. I love them. I said things about people who I know can take a joke and won't be emotional about it".

Although, as Nicki said on her interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, one person was annoyed by it.[1]

Live performances

Minaj made the debut performance of the track live at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards in a medley including "Majesty", "Ganja Burn" and "FEFE".

Minaj later performed the track live on The Ellen DeGeneres Show along with "Ganja Burn" and "FEFE", and also performed it at Made in America Festival 2018.

Music Video

Nicki made mention of the video at the New York Fashion Week Party on September 7, 2018 but was still unsure about the release date. The music video was later officially announced on Queen Radio, the same day as the release on September 10. The video was directed by Hype Williams, who has directed previous videos Nicki including "Massive Attack" and "Bed".

Synopsis

The video opens with an applause as a yellow puppet approaches a curtain concealed stage. He says - "Good evening and welcome, I'd like to welcome every one of you to "Barbies Dreams", yay yay. That's it. Onto the video, yay!" The video continues with Minaj in a variety of colourful outfits and wigs against bright backgrounds, while she plays the puppet-master of various rappers, including Lil Wayne, 50 Cent and Meek Mill, referenced by Minaj in the lyrics.
