"TROLLZ" is a song by American rapper 6ix9ine and Nicki Minaj. It is their third commercially released collaboration following 2018's FEFE and MAMA, which also features Kanye West. 6ix9ine announced the song would have a feature, which DJ Akademiks later confirmed to be Minaj. She was spotted shooting a music video with him in May.
The track was originally set to release as the second single from 6ix9ine's upcoming album on May 22, 2020, but the rapper confirmed the song would not make that date and pushed it a week. The song was then pushed again to respect the Black Lives Matter protests of summer 2020. The new date was announced on June 10th, with both artists confirming a portion of the proceeds will go to The Bail Project to bail out incarcerated Black Lives Matter protesters. On the night of the songs release, Nicki and 6ix9ine went on Instagram live together with their viewers peaking at 925k, a record for women.
Alternative Version[]
Alternative Cover Art
On June 16, 6ix9ine digitally released an alternate version of the song which has different sounding verses from both artists. Minaj tweeted:
The official #Trollz verse was version 11. This was version 1. Verse changes and beat changes... but now u guys get a glimpse of where my verse begins vs. how it ends up once my creative process is complete.[1]
This version sees Minaj once again rapping partly in Spanish, her first time to do so since Karol G's Tusa
The alternative version quickly rose to number 1 on US iTunes, replacing the standard version of TROLLZ which had topped the charts for 4.5 days straight-- the longest chart topper for a female rapper.
Commercial Performance[]
The song debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 becoming Minaj's second song to reach that peak and 6ix9ine's first. It became Minaj's first to debut atop the chart, as well as her first chart topper as a lead artist. She became the first female rapper to achieve that feat this century and the second to do so in all Billboard history, the first being Lauryn Hill with her 1998 hit "Doo Wop (That Thing.)"
TROLLZ became the 40th song to debut at number one in Billboard history, and the 5th song to do so in 2020.
With both Say So (Remix) and TROLLZ topping the Hot 100, Minaj became the only female rapper to have 2 consecutive singles reach the peak of the chart. Both singles charted in the top 10 on the week dated June 27, 2020.
The song debuted with 198k pure sales, as of its release, the largest first week sales of 2020. Thus, it also debuted atop Billboard's Digital Songs chart, her third song to do so in 2020 following Yikes and Say So (Remix).
TROLLZ is currently certified Platinum by RIAA.[2]
Music Video[]
The music video for TROLLZ was shot in 6ix9ine's guest bedroom due to his mandatory house arrest. The video features multiple hair and costume changes by both rappers, colorful visuals, and an inflatable pool scene with dancers.
In less than 24 hours, the video amassed 50.3 million views, becoming both the largest rap single-day debut, topping 6ix9ine's own GOOBA and thus the largest female rap debut, topping Minaj's Anaconda, the previous record holder. Youtube later rescinded this accomplishment stating the video received many 'views' from paid advertisements for the video, a practice previously employed by BTS among other acts.
